Here is another question from one of my readers:

Question 1 : I saw these pictures on your blog. I really liked it and decided to get some but I wanted you to answer a few questions before I let someone (other then you) do my tree braids...

Question 2 :Are they hard to maintain?

No I think that they are quite easy to maintain. I tell my clients to wrap it at night and wash it ever 2 weeks or so with a waterless shampoo or sea breeze.

Question 3 : About How long do they take?

They take me approximately 4 hours

Question 4: What is the price range for tree braids?

Between $160-$200

Question 5 : Do you do them yourself?

Does the hair cover up the braids so they are not seen?

I am getting my hair braided with individuals in the back and a row of cornrows in the front. My head is big and I want to know how many packs of 100% kanekalon hair should I bring.

Answer:

If I did your hair and I was doing the feed in cornrows I would use 2-3 packs of hair.

Do you still recommend free tress hair? How long can people leave it in, how does it do with regards to tangling and shedding? Is it true that you can't wash your hair at all while in the braids? And you can't go swimming, etc? You have to wash your scalp with dry shampoo and a wet cloth? I got braids, but I'm not understanding from my braider what to do, do I put things on the hair, oils, mousse, I'm clueless. Can you put hair products on fake hair?

I used Miss Willow Elements and my braider hates the hair, not how it looks, but just she said it took 7 hours to do instead of I guess 4 to 6 because of how hard it was for her to pull apart and that it tangles as she braids it and she kept saying her fingers hurt too much. She says I need to get human hair next time like Milky Way, but it is a lot more money so I wanted to know if I really need to buy more expensive hair or just a different brand of synth hair that maybe she never worked with or is it that I need a new tree braider?

Also, is it different for Caucasian hair? She said the larger braids were due to the synth hair I bought, which was thermofiber, not due to my hair being slippery, but I think that the no washing or swimming at all is from my hair being too slippery to hold the braid if I do anything that might disturb it. Also now she wants me take it out after only 4 weeks because she thinks this hair will be too tangly and make it too hard for her to remove it if I go longer and I wasn't expecting after spending a little over $200 to only have that carry me 4 weeks.

I do like the way it looks now and I like the big even curl of the deep wave hair, but I wonder if human hair will soften the look up for me too much next time and also cost me a fortune.

If you do buy more expensive human hair for tree braids can you reuse it? I would think the hair would be in a tangly mess after being all braided up for weeks plus wouldn't it be kind of yucky at some point if I'm not ever supposed to wash it and plus it is summer right now so at some point on some days I'm sweating?

Am wondering if you know of any brands that truly don't tangle that I could use next time human or synth? I was wondering if you have you worked with the pro 10 brandy hair for tree braiding? And I guess there is no way to do any regular swimming with a swim cap with this hair style? Someone else suggested a wig if I want to go swimming, but how can my own hair grow with a wig glued to my head and wouldn't that begin to itch even more? I could see if I had chemo and was bald, but I do have hair so I'm not sure how the whole wig idea would work for long as at some point I'm going to have longer hair and it would get bumpy I would think and hot and sweaty and itchy. But it sounded good that you can swim, wet it, etc compared to what I'm being told now with my tree braids.

WOW is all I can say... I am going to do my best to answer Jennifer's question if I miss a question I am going to apologize in advance. Well first I would like to say that I do still recommend the free tress hair for tree braids as I know it to be a great alternative to human hair. However the texture of hair DOES matter. Some of the free tress hair is too curly to be used and would cause your stylist to be very frustrated! I know because I have been there. When using synthetic hair for tree braids you want to make sure that the curl pattern you use is a loose one that will not tangle easily when separated. I do recommend the brandy pro 10 hair as well. I have had many clients who enjoy its versatility.

I do not encourage anyone to NOT was their hair. I think that that is just bad hygiene. I mean really your scalp is part of your body, and you wouldn't (well maybe I should say shouldn't you never know these days) not wash your face for 4 weeks right? well your scalp should get the same treatment. I say to wash it every other week . And yes you can use the waterless shampoos to help with cleaning between washings. I think that is a great idea.

Yes you can put products on the fake hair. You might want to stay away from products for the synthetic hair as there can be some adverse affects. If any of the products cause the hair to do anything that you don't want just wash them out! Not I don't mean get in the shower and was your natural hair, just wash the artificial hair and get the product out of it. I recommend my clients to do this all the time. It may not be time to wash your natural hair but the fake hair might stink! so wash it, and as long as you are not getting your natural hair wet it will not cause your hair to loosen prematurely.

As for the larger braids, I can bet that the larger braids are due to your braiders frustration with the hair that you brought. It was hard to separate so she wanted to speed up the process so she made the parts thicker thus making the braids bigger. She could have made the braids as small as she does with human hair, but it would have taken her even longer then the 7 hours she had already spent on your hair so to speed up the process she made bigger braids. You can't really blame her too much. She put you in a 4 hour slot and it took 7. She might have had another client waiting. She should have charged you more and took her time and done them the way you wanted.

As for the $200 bill she gave you... I think that if your braids were large then that price is a bit much. Did she put individuals in the back at least?

No you can't reuse the hair for tree braiding.

How to curl the ends of Kinky twists with a string

I was about to film a quick video on how to curl the ends of kinky twists and then I thought to look it up on YouTube to see if someone has already done it and I found it. I have lots of people ask me how to do it so I wanted to make sure that I let you all see how it is done.

Also one of the great things about curling the hair this way is that you don't just have to do it with the kinky twists! Here is a picture of me with micro braids curled with a string.

Tree braider in NY

Hi Kristen,

I found your website in my search for tree braids. I have never done the style before, but I am interested in trying it, as it seems to be a different look from braids, and probably takes less time. Do tree braids in fact take less time? I wear my hair pretty short, and the texture is fine, is tree braiding a style you would recommend for someone like me? You do such a wonderful job with your styles, are you located in the NY area? If not, can you suggest somewhere in NY where they do a great job with tree braids? Your response would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Yes tree braids do take less time then most other braided styles. Tree braids can take anywhere between 2-4 hours to complete. The length of your hair is not a problem. As long as your hair is long enough to be cornrowed then it is long enough to tree braid. As for the texture of your hair, you just need to find a braider who knows how to braid fine hair. There is a different technique braiders use when cornrowing fine hair. As for a tree braider in NY... I don't know... Nafy hair is softer and makes the twist look neater. The pack comes with more hair in it then the Masterpiece. The Nafy also costs about $1 or $2 more. When I do my own I use Nafy. I guess I am a bit bias =)

I really like the hair! I have never had any problems with it. I only recommend what I like and what I know works. But remember the more you pay for the hair the better the quality and the longer it will last. If you are getting the tree braids I would suggest you not spend too much on the hair as the hair will not be able to be reused. I hope this helps.

Well lacing is just like micro braids however you pull a little hair out of the braid. So you attach the artificial hair and braid down a few strokes and then you pull some hair out of the braid. Then you braid down about 2 strokes and then you braid a bit more. You continue this pattern until you have the desired amount of hair out of the braid. Then you braid down to the end of the clients hair and close the braid by tying it or sealing it with glue. I hope this helps you!

Somthing new Learning to love my hair

So I am working through this whole "go natural" and rock it with confidence thing. Well this has made me think about the movie "Something New" With Sanaa Lathan. If you saw this movie then you remember the scene where Sanaa's love interest tells her that he would like to see her real hair and then Sanaa takes out her weave and her love interest who happens to be a white man loves it so much. Her African American Love interest on the other hand wants her to put the weave back in. Well I must admit that my Husband loves my hair, but I have had a few white men hit on me sense my weave is out! For whatever reason white men like the natural hair and black men may prefer a weave. Is it that they somewhere subconsciously want a white woman? I am not saying that that is the answer but I am saying that that could be a strong possibility. Whatever black men want is what they want and I am happy to know that my black man wants me! And I am happy to be able to say that with confidence! Anyway enough with my monolauge.....All I can say now is that every week that passes I become more comfortable with my hair. I am experiencing baby steps. I am learning to love myself and my hair and I hope that I can encourage you to grow your natural hair out and rock it love it and love you!

Why do I feel ugly when I take out my weave?

I just wanted to get my readers feel about weaves.

Now I am the first to tell you that I LOVE weaves! They have been a great way for me to grow out my hair. My hair is strong and healthy and I am so happy with the condition of my hair. But here lies the problem.

Why is it that the moment you take out you weave you feel less attractive. You feel like your beauty is determined by the artificial hair that you have in your hair. Now maybe this is just me and please let me know if that is the case. Right now I have no weave (as you can obveously see in the pic =). I have used wonderful products (miss Jessies Curly Buttercreme) that have made it look amazing! But for some reason I am not feeling as attractive as I usually do. Why do I feel like I need a Beyonce lace front wig to be beautiful. I should look at myself in the mirror and think WOW! Right?

Then I think about my daughter. Was I teaching her to hate her beautiful natural hair by wearing weaves? Like any child she wants to do what her mother does and if her mom has a weave guess what she wanted...a weave. She didn't get one because she is far too young for that.

Well now I am rocking it natural and I do like it but there is still something in the back of my mind that is telling me that I need to have long hair to be beautiful. Has anyone else felt that way before? Let me know

How many packs to use for the tree braids?

I am always asked how many packs of hair should be used for tree braids.

There are 2 answers to this question:

If you are going to use synthetic hair then I suggest that you use 3 packs of hair as the packs tend to tangle more, and there is less hair in the pack as compared with the human hair. Because synthetic hair is so much cheaper then human hair buying an additional pack will still be cheaper the getting human hair.

If you are going to get human hair by the ounce then you will need to buy 8 ounces which is usually 2 bundles. If you are going to your local beauty supply store and they sale it by the pack then you are going to want to get 2 packs and make sure they are at least 18inches long.

Please keep pointing your questions and I will do a better job of answering them for you all!

The synthetic hair I am using is tangling!

When doing individual tree braids with synthetic hair I have had people ask me what should they do to make sure that the hair does not tangle while braiding.

Well I first what you to make sure that the hair that you are using is not too long because the longer the hair that you uses is the more prone to tangling it will be.

You also want to make sure that the hair that you are using is not too curly. The curlier the hair is the more likely it is to tangle. If you have to have a very curly type of hair you want to make sure that you do not braid to fast because the faster that you braid the more likely it is to tangle. Braid slower and watch what you do to make sure that it does not tangle.

If none of the above suggestions are feasible for you then I suggest that you use a light oil to glaze your fingers with and this will help with the tangles. But don't use too much because this can cause the hair to be weighed down with oil.

Miss Jessie's Curly Buttercream

Yes I braid but I can help you to manage your natural hair as well. There are some products that I recommend over other products and Miss Jessie's is one of the ones that I love! My absolute favorite product from Miss Jessie's is her Buttercream. It is by far the best moisturizing cream that I have found to date. It will hydrate even the driest curls. I think that I should put a warning on the product that less is more. If you apply too much you will see that your hair will be too heavy and that you will not achieve the desired look that you are looking for. So the $58 dollar jar is what I would get if you want to moisturize. The smell is very minty and when applied it does tingle the scalp. If you are applying it to children’s hair I would suggest that you go with the baby Buttercream as it does not have the minty tingle that children sometimes don’t like.

With the $58 price tag I still recommend it because it lasts so long and look what it can do!

So as you can see I am in love with the tree braids. I think that this has become one of my favorite styles. I love tree braids because they are so much more healthy for your hair then individual braids that put too much stress on each individual follicle of your hair especially around the edges. And not only is it more healthy but it takes less time them micro braids! So I am a fan.

So if you like big hair then this may be for you. You get the sleek style of my trademarked feed in cornrows and you get the full curly effect of individual tree braids. So I think that is hot. I used synthetic hair for this style. My favorite synthetic hair is Free Tress. It is almost like human hair and is is MUCH cheaper! So if you are not looking to spent the big bucks on human hair then here is a great example of synthetic hair.

It's so funny because I do my best to do so many intricate hair designs. I try new things all the time but sometimes I have to remember the basics. More tree braids!!1 I don't know which one I like more the wet and wavy hair or the straight hair. I mean it is a toss up for me. I like the versatility of the straight hair because if you want you can curl it it hand make it look really cute, but if you but a decent grade of the wet and wavy hair then you can do the same thing.... so I guess I like them both the same. I was so excited to do her hair because I knew this was something that she would really appreciate. This is a great style because you get the look of a full weave with the versatility of individual braids. I think this is a great look on her. Here are Micro braids done with synthetic hair. The brand of hair used was Hadora. The hair style was Hollywood curl, and the color was T2/130. I really liked this synthetic hair because it didn't tangle as much as other synthetic hair that I have used in the past. My client said that she bought this hair in Germany so I am not sure if you can buy it here in the states but that's why I LOVE the Internet! I am sure that someone somewhere is selling it. I used 3 1/4 packs of Masterpiece Kinky twist hair. I really like this hair. I do however prefer the Nafty Collection but when Nafty Collection is nowhere to be found then I surly recommend Masterpiece as a great synthetic hair to use for Kinky twists. More Feed in cornrows also known as no knot cornrows. This is a simple fun way to wear braids. It takes about an hour to complete and lasts for about 2 weeks! It doesn't get much better then that. Just make sure to keep your scalp moisturized and tie your hair down with a silk scarf to reduce frizzing. I used synthetic hair to achieve this braided look. Human hair isn't the only hair that you have to use when doing tree braids. Synthetic hair is MUCH CHEAPER then the human hair, it comes with many different curl patterns, but the hair itself doesn't last as long. So if you like to wear tree braids for about 2-4 weeks then the synthetic hair might be a better bet for you! Micro Kinky Twists

I used a brand of Kinky hair called Masterpiece. I used the color PM1B-30. These came out very nice. I too liked this hair because it was easy to separate in order to make the smaller twists. I only used 2 packs of hair so that my client would be able to pit it in a ponytail with ease, and so that the hair would not be too heavy on her hair which could lead to too much stress on the individual follicle of her hair. I used Beauti Collection Marly Briaid color 1B to achieve this look. I curled the ends using perm rods and boiling hot water. Previously I only really liked to use Nafy Collection hair for kinky twists, but I thin that I like this brand too. I still like Nafy, but this is a close second! Here is another tree braided style. I used 18 inch Milky Way brand hair. I used 2 packs of the hair. I prefer to use 24 inch hair but I can do it with the 18 inch as long as I am doing it with the wet and wavy hair and not straight hair. You can find this hair at your local beauty supply store. You can also check out some of the links on this page and they should direct you to sites where you can purchase hair online! This hair was 39.99 per pack but you may be able to find a better deal online.

Also see that I put individual braids in the back so that my client can put her hair up into a ponytail. After I finish the cornrow for the tree braid I braid it past her hair and seal the end with a knot. It ends up just blending with the individuals that are already in the back! Here is a tree braided style I created using 18 inch hair. Now I know I constantly recommend using 24 inch hair and I am a true believer that it looks best with that length hair, but it is possible to create the look with shorter hair. If you are going to buy shorter hair it is best that it be wet and wavy and not straight hair because there will tend to be short pieces that will poke out and create a less professional look. More tree Braids for you! I used Milky Way 100% human hair for this style. In my opinion this is the best wet and wavy hair that I have found that is readily available at your local beauty supply store. So if you are a person who is not particularly found of purchasing hair online then I would recommend getting Milky Way brand hair. Their even their straight hair is pretty good. I am still a fan of hair that I buy online but if that is not an option for you then I say go with the Milky Way hair! The Milky way hair can also be purchased online. If you look at some of the google ads there may be some sites where you can purchase hair. I am pretty sure that you can find Milky Way hair if you click on some of the ads, but can't promise you.... Hello everyone here are a few more pictures of tree braids. I used 2 colors to achieve this color 6 and 27. prefer to use 24 inch hair when I do tree braids because it makes the style more full and it helps to cover the braids better, but the look can be accomplished with shorter hair. I used 18 inch hair with this client. I don't know about you the reader, but I am a huge fan of tree braids because I believe that is is a wonderful style to wear while you are growing out your hair. You are able to easily moisturize your scalp without being impeded by hair tracks that are on a weft. There is no need to use a needle to sew in the hair although you may want to use a needle and thread to sew the end of the braid that ends at the back of the head back onto itself so that it doesn't hang in the back and look funny! But that is really only necessary if the clients real hair is long. Anyway If you are not in the Raleigh NC area I would reccomend that you look for a stylist that has experience wit tree braids and try them out! Lastly make sure that you look at the google ads on the page some may interest you. There are great sites that have information on places to purchase hair to achieve some of these styles, others give advice on what you can do to make your hair grow. OK, so I am amazed with Lace front wigs!! For years I wondered how celebrities like Beyonce, Tyra Banks, Brandy and others have a full head of hair with a perfect hair line. Then I found out that they have lace front wigs. These wigs give the appearances of a perfect hairline. Each hair is individually sewn onto a lace cap to make it look like the hair is actually growing out of your scalp! Well I am a big fan and wanted to learn how to do it so I did some research on YouTube and I found someone who posted a videos of them doing a lace front wig on themselves. From ancient times to the near present, loss of scalp hair was a fact of life. Only within the past half-century has there been a choice to live with hair loss, or do something to halt it, reverse it, or replace it. Well I know that tree braids are slowly becoming more and more popular so I was thinking of different ways to wear the hair once you get the tree braids done. So I found a video on You Tube from a user called "curlyheadedgirl " that shows you how to do a straw set . This is a wonderful style for you to do if you have straight human hair tree braids. If you are tired of having your hair straight then I suggest you switch it up and put some curls in your hair! People will think that you just got your hair done! I hope that you enjoy the clip and that you learn something from it because I sure did! The only thing that I would suggest if you have straight hair would be to use a setting lotion before you apply the straws and to let your hair dry before you remove the straws!!! The young lady in the video had natural hair and so there was less need to wait for the hair to dry but if you have straight hair please please let it completely dry or you will be gravely disappointed!

Cornrows with invisibles

I did two rows of feed in cornrows and rather then braid the hair down to the ends, like I normally do; I decided to make the ends free using a braiding technique used in invisible braids. I really like this look because it gives the impression that the clients hair is out in the back when in fact it is really braided! We used Beverly Johnson's Water wave hair. The color was two toned so the top half was color # 4 and the bottom was 27. I blended it so that the color was more evenly distributed. Check out the photos I hope you enjoy! Here are some wet and wavy micro braids that I did. I uses 2 of my most favorite products in this client's hair. Here is another repeat coustomer who had just the front of her hair re-cornrowed. We used a wet and wavy type of synthetic hair to achieve this look. Again I used the feed in technique to allow for less stress on the edges of the clients hair. The design is just something that I made up as I was braiding. I love it when I can just be creative with the style! I used a touch of the hair Cream called Liv as a moisturizer while I braided. Here are the much needed pictures of mens braids, or cornrows for the site! These are what I consider one row of small cornrows with a design. This is all his natural hair so I did not fee in any human or synthetic hair. I used a product called Liv as a moisturizer for his scalp and hair. I also used the leave in conditioner Infusium 23 which I diluted with water in a spray bottle as an added moisturizer and detangler while I braided.

Madam C.J. Walker

I think that Madam C.J. Walker is one of the most progressive black women for her time because she saw an opportunity and wasn't afraid to exploit it. Despite being born to a former slave family, losing her parents at the age of 7 and later her husband at the age of 20 Madam C.J. Walker exemplified strength. She believed that one of the many practices that were raped from black women when they were brought to the US during slavery was the care for black hair. So she developed Black hair care products that would help to grow black hair. She sold her products through mail order and trained sales people to go door to do in a successful attempt to get her product into the hands of the masses. One of her inventions that is still in use today is the pressing comb. She has left a significant mark on black hair.

Here is another style that I have completed. We used Toyokalon synthetic hair for these braids. I did two rows because I think that it makes the style look fuller and it allows the braids to last a bit longer. This again is what I call the feed-in technique. Here is one of my favorite braiding styles to do. I again used the feed-in technique to achieve this look. I used about 2 packs of synthetic hair. I like this method a lot because it puts less stress on the client’s edges which eliminates the issue that the knot cornrows cause by pulling out the client’s edges. With the feed in technique you will not have to worry about having your hair pulled out no matter how weak your edges are. I believe in the preservation of hair; I don't want you hair to only look nice in the style I do, I want it to look nice when it is time to take them out!. Here are things you can eat that may help to improve the overall health of your hair:

Vitamin A has antioxidant which helps in the production of sebum in the scalp. Foods that contain vitamin A :meat, milk, spinach, broccoli, carrots, peaches, and apricots. Please not that more than 25,000 IU per day is toxic and could cause serious health problems!!!

Vitamin C also has antioxidant that helps promote hair health. Foods that contain vitamin C: Citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwi, cantaloupe, pineapple, tomatoes, green peppers, kiwi, cantaloupe, pineapple, and dark green vegetables. Do not exceed 60 mg.

Vitamin E has antioxidant that enhances scalp circulation. Food that contain vitamin E: soybeans, raw seeds,dried beans, nuts, and leafy green vegetables. Do not exceed Up to 400 IU.

Please check with your doctor before adding any vitamin as there may be an adverse affect if taking medications or if you take too much of a certain supplement

I used color #27 and #4 wet and wavy human hair to achieve this look. I alternated between the two colors to achieve this natural blend. These tree braids usually last between 6-8 weeks. You can buy this hair online or in you local beauty supply store. I prefer to buy y hair online because I can find any hair type stile and texture any time I want. There is no design that I can't accomplish. This client brought a picture of a design that she wanted and I was able to achieve it! I used the brand of hair called Milky Way. It was synthetic hair. I used the feed in technique. She was very satisfied with the look achieved.

PHILADELPHIA - Chemical "relaxers" used to straighten hair are not associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer among African-American women, say researchers who followed 48,167 Black Women's Health Study participants.

In the May issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, researchers from Boston University and Howard University Cancer Center found no increase in breast cancer risk due to the type of hair relaxer used or the frequency and duration of use. Women who used relaxers seven or more times a year over a 20 year span or longer had the same risk as women who used the chemicals for less than a year, researchers say.

"This is good news," said the study's lead investigator, Lynn Rosenberg, Sc.D., professor of epidemiology at Boston University School of Public Health. "The present study is definitive that hair relaxers don't cause breast cancer, as much as an epidemiologic study can be."

Previous research shows that breast cancer incidence is higher among African-American women age 40 or younger than among Caucasian women of the same age, and this increased risk is not fully explained by known risk factors, such as race and family history. At all ages, African-American women are more likely to die of breast cancer than are Caucasian women. To shed light on these findings and to study potential causes of breast cancer and other serious illnesses that affect black women, the Black Women's Health Study was launched across the United States in 1995. More than 59,000 women completed an initial questionnaire and more than 80 percent have answered follow-up questions every two years since, including questions about use of hair relaxers.

Hair relaxers can enter the body through cuts or lesions in the scalp. These products are not fully monitored by the Food and Drug Administration, and thus could contain potentially harmful compounds, Rosenberg said. Manufacturers of hair relaxers and hair dyes are not required to list all ingredients of their products on the packages, as some may be considered trade secrets, she said.

"Because hair relaxers are more widely used by younger African-American women than they are used by older African-American women, a connection with increased risk of breast cancer in younger women seemed possible," Rosenberg said. "Also, millions of African-American women use hair relaxers, and substances that are used by millions of women over a span of many years should be monitored for safety."

The researchers found that younger women used hair relaxers more than older women did. They also discovered that the majority of women used hair relaxers before age 20 and a third used the chemicals at least seven times a year. But when they examined the association between use of hair relaxers and breast cancer, based on 574 newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer identified during the follow-up period, they found no connection between use of relaxers and breast cancer incidence overall or among the younger women, even if use had been frequent and of long duration.

The study was funded by the National Cancer Institute. Co-authors include Julie Palmer, Sc.D., and Deborah Boggs, M.S., of Boston University School of Public Health, and Lucile Adams-Campbell, Ph.D., of Howard University Cancer Center.

What is tree braiding? It is a hair weaving technique that is natural and virtually undetectable method of weaving available.
